One of my favorites: Pigment

Nestled on 30th Street in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego, Pigment is perhaps my favorite store in the city.  They strive to embody all the things I admire about a brand: organic, modern, friendly, homegrown, and local, with incredible style to boot.  It is a beautiful gift store with a laid-back vibe, full of plants, jewelry, home goods, accessories, stationery, and much more.  Every time I visit I am inspired!

Besides amazing home wares, Pigment offers a “plant lab” where you can choose your plant, a planter or terrarium, and any number of pretty decorative stones, gravel mixes, and sand options to assemble your own creation right there in the store.

Pigment also carries sweet children’s goods and an enviable selection of bath and body care, including tons of swoon-worthy candles.  (Btw, I am kicking myself for not buying that pretty little rainbow print to add to my gallery wall at home — isn’t it precious?)

If you’re in San Diego and have a bit of time, Pigment is not to be missed.  Saunter, browse, and enjoy!  They are always adding fun new things, and many of their products are by local brands and makers.  If you only wish you could be in San Diego, they have an online shop as well.

Craving a bite to eat or an excellent cup of coffee?  Urban Solace two doors down serves a delicious brunch, and you can hop across the street for coffee at Dark Horse Roasters while you wait for a table.  Let’s just say you won’t be sorry.

Chilly!

I know we have it better than most of the country, but here in southern California we’ve been getting our first “real” winter in quite some time.  We had snow in Los Angeles yesterday!  It’s been cold enough that I have ice on my windshield when I leave for work each morning, so you can bet I’ve been bundling up more than usual.  Here are a few pieces I’ve had in heavy rotation lately: a cozy sweater, wool coat, comfy boots and denim, and a little yellow bag from MCM to brighten these chilly days.  Happy weekend!

Day to night

img_0595I had a personal triumph on Friday and just had to share.  Yes, that’s right… I successfully navigated, in fact NEEDED, to transition from day to night!  Now, I know what you are thinking: is that really a thing?  I hear you!  I didn’t think so either.  Margaret Lyons and I have clearly been on the same page thus far.  But Friday night I had a concert performance, and of course I had work during the day.  Behold!  A day-to-night opportunity was born.

For my orchestra concerts I need to wear all black, but at the office I prefer not to look like I am going to a funeral.  Also I prefer not to wear evening wear to the office (for obvious reasons).  My outfit for the evening consisted of a silky black top with a dramatic tie-waist, slim cigarette pants, a trim black blazer, and black heels.  To day-ify it, I swapped the blazer for a medium wash denim jacket, and wore leopard loafers instead of the heels.  My same pair of filigree earrings went from slightly bohemian to elegant with just a jacket change.

Yes, Virginia Margaret, there is a Santa Claus need for day-to-night outfits.  I am living proof — AND I lived to tell the tale.

Eclectic glam

New year, new update for our living room!  The overall vibe of CB2’s latest catalog had me dying with gorgeousness — perfectly shadowy, perfectly glamorous, perfectly eclectic and moody.  With a few tweaks I thought I could shift our casual style a bit more glam, and now I am over-the-moon excited with our living space.

I kept most of our larger pieces and swapped out smaller elements.  Our green velvet and tan leather sofas are still great foundation items that I love, for example.  Also my jelly bean coffee table in white stone is still perfection in my eyes.  Instead of two patterned rugs layered together, though, I opted for a beautiful wool rug in a creamy ivory with a tonal hexagon pattern.  Already this took our space in a less bohemian and more refined direction.  The large beach-y print we had over one sofa I replaced with Joshua Schicker’s No Turning Radius print, a black and white abstract.  Over the other sofa I replaced our “We’re Here and It’s Now” poster with a more linear black and white abstract I painted myself, and pillows in navy and grey velvet and an inky mural print replaced my pink velvet cushions.  A brass drum pendant over our dining table was a glam upgrade from the wood hoop pendant DIY I made a several years ago, and a navy lacquer credenza makes for a sleek and modern storage option over the open console table we had stashed baskets under previously.  And a silver and agate side table made for a less casual option than my ceramic garden stool.  Add a classical bust, a quirky/glam lamp, and my favorite ceramics pieces, and voila!  A moody, eclectic haven I can’t wait to come home to every night.

Below you’ll find some of the items I added or swapped into our home, followed by items I already had that I kept in the mix.  At the very bottom you’ll see a few of the decor items I swapped out to give you an idea of the before and after.  Enjoy!

Force for good

The Women’s March 2019 is coming up on Saturday, and I’ll be marching again in support of women’s rights and gender equality for all.  With these issues on my mind, today I am wearing my Madewell x Girls Inc. sweater.  Proceeds from sales go to support Girls Inc. and its mission of empowering young women through advocacy and education.  Cozy, chic, and a force for good.

Five great consoles

I’m not sure if it’s the freshness of a new year or the lull after the holidays, but either way, I’m in the mood to shake things up with our home decor.  I’ve been ruminating on a potential new media console for our living room, and there are such good ones out there at the moment!  Here are a few that have caught my eye to kick-start your weekend.  I think that navy lacquer beauty will fit best in our space, but I’m still on the prowl.  In the meantime, enjoy some eye candy — and happy Friday!

In Living Coral

pantone_living_coralPantone’s Color of the Year for 2019 has been announced as Living Coral, “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.”  I am 100% here for it.  It’s a fresh version of the millennial pink trend that never really went away, and I am happy to embrace it.

I’m particularly fond of corals and pinks when mixed with a bit of eclecticism.  Think earthy ceramics, warm woods, mid-century touches, and maybe an old world portrait or two.  Even better if there is a mix of textures: velvet, rattan, wood, lacquer, and leather, oh my!  The interiors below get it exactly right, in my opinion — fresh, quirky-fun, and easy to live with.

Break out the coral-colored glasses for 2019, guys.  It’s going to be the year of Living Coral.

Three great design books

Right now there are so many inspiring books on design to choose from!  If I had to pick three right now, I’d be diving into these handsome volumes.  Each has a unique point of view, but all feature amazing, quirky, beautiful spaces that I’d love to pore over again and again.  Coincidentally, all three are by incredible women that I am proud to support.

Fir? Sure!

A few years ago I stumbled upon my very favorite holiday candle of all time, Frasier Fir by Thymes.  To me, it is just perfection.  Every year growing up we’d drive out to choose a Christmas tree and then decorate it as a family, the whole living room smelling like the holidays had arrived.  To this day, the scent of a fir tree makes me happy.

As an adult and as a musician, December gets very busy, so for years now I have opted for a faux tree to streamline our holiday decorating.  Scent is such a powerful thing, though, so I splurge on a new Frasier Fir candle every holiday season.  The glow of lights from the tree, the scent of fir needles, and a mug of tea while cozied up on the couch is about as close to perfect as I can ask for at this time of year.

Fun things!

This week my mind is all over the place — Holidays soon!  Thanksgiving to clean up after!  Gifts to buy!  Here are a few fun things on my radar at the moment:

I’m in love with this faux fur coat — it’s beautiful cozy coats like this that make me wish for colder weather!
