Flight of fancy

I love a dash of whimsy in a space, especially in subtle, unexpected ways.  Lately I am loving quirky animal accents, and if it’s brass-toned, so much the better!

I fell for this charming little mallard mirror years ago when I saw it in Kim and Scott’s beautiful bathroom.  It was such a fun touch in a classic room, and I couldn’t get it out of my mind.

Fast forward a couple years and this quirky lamp had to be mine.  It lives on my dresser, and makes me smile every time I see it.

Likewise for these Farmkeep knobs from Anthropologie — I have the goose and hare on our nightstand drawers, and they are so adorable!  They have since sold out, but these bunny-ear knobs or sleeping foxes are equally great options.

Most recent to capture my heart?  This beautiful brass bird side tableThis is a slightly less spendy option, but I love the webbed feet on the first one so much!  It is currently in my living room, and I am having great fun trying to find just the right spot for it.  It feels equal parts glam and fanciful — perfect.

Five great pendants

Pendant lighting has been having a real moment of late.  Pendants are classic and versatile, and with so many beautiful choices these days, you can easily find something to refresh your space.  Here are five I am currently coveting:

This lovely milk glass option is feminine in all the right ways.  It would add just the right touch of Parisian flair to a breakfast nook.

A sleek nude nude pendant with Scandi vibes can make a quiet statement wherever you might hang it.

Alabaster combined with a faceted bulb makes for a glam and alluring option.  I’d love to see a pair of these flanking a velvet headboard in a bedroom.

Cement’s industrial edge is tempered by warm wood in this visually well-balanced choice.

This petite pink cylinder pendant is right on-trend with it’s blush hue and diminutive size.  A row of three of these over a kitchen island would be beautiful AND functional — and they’re a great price to boot.

Little rusty

As September gets going, I inevitably think of back-to-school times.  It stays hot in southern CA well through October, but I love fall clothing and could hardly wait to break out that new brown corduroy jumper or pretty sweater.

It is far, far too hot to consider sweaters at the moment, but in the meantime I’m feeling inspired by rusty, earthy hues in every iteration.  Rust can look fresh with white, wicker, and linen, or deliciously moody with deep blues and ochres.  Terracotta, amber, burnt sienna — whatever the hue, these interiors incorporate rust beautifully, and I’m here for it.

Summertime, an’ the livin’ is easy

I’m not quite ready for summer to end yet!  Breezy neutrals are still on my mind — rattan, wood, linen, and all the rest.  If you’re still feeling as summery as I am, here are a few reading nook chair/table/lamp combos to curl up in and relax over the long weekend, drink in hand.

Eclectic, light, and easy, these pieces will give a relaxing vibe to your home all year long.  And if you need any reading suggestions for the weekend, might I suggest this or this?  Kick back and enjoy!

Dreaming…

A recent CNN article reminded me that in some towns in Italy, you can buy a fixer-upper for ONE EURO.  That’s right, you read that correctly!  For just a little over $1, you can own your very own pied-à-terre in Italy.  The stipulations vary from town to town, but generally there is a deposit of around $3,000 and a time limit of a few years to fix up the property to a minimum level of livability, after which point you get your deposit back.

While the price tag is beyond tempting, I’m not sure we can jump into a renovation project on a different continent at this juncture in our lives.  That being said, I’m still dreaming!  All of these stunning spaces leave me inspired and longing for a pretty place of my own to relax abroad — even more so since we just returned from Paris.  Le sigh.

Five great stools under $100

With the 4th of July holiday weekend almost upon us, perhaps you need some flexible seating for guests?  A spot for a cold beverage?  Someplace to kick up your feet?  A stool or ottoman can be all of the above!  Here are five stylish options that won’t break the bank.

A sleek hourglass shape in matte black makes a quiet statement.

Cane and rattan are having a moment, and I love this pretty option.

As classic as you can get. Add a tray on top for the perfect book-and-a-drink landing spot!

Warm wood and a sculptural shape at a steal of a price.

Graphic and modern — just the thing to punch up a neutral space.

Things I’m loving lately

Obsessing over classic chair designs by Cherner and Bertoia lately, and mulling over beautiful dining chair combinations.

Applauding the genius of Jenny Komenda’s idea to use small dining tables as oversize end tables in a living space.  I just got this bistro table and am loving the look next to our sofas!  Maybe I should finally pull the trigger on this lamp to go with it?  I’ve been in love with it for months.

Thrilled with Bloomscape‘s easy-peasy way of letting you shop for indoor plants that will work with your space and lifestyle.  I need low-light, easy care, pet friendly options, which has seemed like a pretty tall order.  I’m so happy to know now there are plants that might do well in our home!  Their pots are also quite lovely, yes?  I see a couple of these in my near future.

Happy Friday!

Cali-Scandi cool

A friend and her husband have just moved into a new apartment, airy and bright and complete with a white brick fireplace.  Their last place came furnished, I should mention, so they are starting almost from scratch in their new home.  She has a great eye and loves a clean, Scandi sort of feel, with soothing neutrals and lots of plants.  Since I love pulling together a space, here are some of the ideas I’ve floated her way.

Mid-century and Scandinavian pieces in a mix of wood tones with neutral-colored textiles give a collected feel while still soothing the eye.  A variety of textures (caning, tufting, leather, jute) keep things just interesting enough.  Add a tonal rug that skews somewhere between traditional and beachy California cool, and you’ve got a layered space ready to relax in.  Maybe try stacking some beautiful design books on the coffee table?  With an equally beautiful candle?  (Here’s one to try.)  And don’t forget tons of planters and vases to bring in ALL the greenery.

Since they have so much to buy all at once, I tried to skew on the end of readily available and relatively inexpensive, without sacrificing beauty and function (looking at you, sofa and leather pouf — swoon).  Enjoy!

One of my favorites: Pigment

Nestled on 30th Street in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego, Pigment is perhaps my favorite store in the city.  They strive to embody all the things I admire about a brand: organic, modern, friendly, homegrown, and local, with incredible style to boot.  It is a beautiful gift store with a laid-back vibe, full of plants, jewelry, home goods, accessories, stationery, and much more.  Every time I visit I am inspired!

Besides amazing home wares, Pigment offers a “plant lab” where you can choose your plant, a planter or terrarium, and any number of pretty decorative stones, gravel mixes, and sand options to assemble your own creation right there in the store.

Pigment also carries sweet children’s goods and an enviable selection of bath and body care, including tons of swoon-worthy candles.  (Btw, I am kicking myself for not buying that pretty little rainbow print to add to my gallery wall at home — isn’t it precious?)

If you’re in San Diego and have a bit of time, Pigment is not to be missed.  Saunter, browse, and enjoy!  They are always adding fun new things, and many of their products are by local brands and makers.  If you only wish you could be in San Diego, they have an online shop as well.

Craving a bite to eat or an excellent cup of coffee?  Urban Solace two doors down serves a delicious brunch, and you can hop across the street for coffee at Dark Horse Roasters while you wait for a table.  Let’s just say you won’t be sorry.
